The summer holidays can be expensive, with a recent survey by comparethemarket.com revealing that London families spend around £748 to keep their kids entertained, which is £206 more than the national average. Thankfully, feeding them when you’re out and about needn’t be super expensive, with plenty of restaurants in London offering Kids Eat Free deals…
1: Hix Restaurants, various locations Kids eat free all year round at Mark Hix’s London restaurants. Children under 10 can choose a complimentary main course from the kids menu when accompanied by a dining adult between 4-6pm Monday to Friday, and 12-6pm on weekends at HIX Soho, Tramshed and Hixter. Mark Hix has campaigned for better menus for children, meaning you’re onto a good thing here – Hix’s menus offer the best of British seasonal food designed specially for younger diners, such as breaded chicken escalope with a garden salad and Glenarm minute-steak with chips. hixrestaurants.co.uk
2: YO!, various locations YO! – the fun, fresh Japanese food restaurant with the conveyor-belt sushi – has brought its Kids Eat Free offer back for the summer holidays. From 20 July until 1 September, kids aged 12 and under can enjoy a main, side, edamame and a drink from the Mini Ninja Meal Deal menu (usually worth £6.50) all for absolutely nothing. When dining with a paying adult, children can enjoy dishes such as moreish maki and pumpkin or chicken katsu curry. YO!’s menu also features puzzles, quizzes and coloring activities, as well as delicious desserts for £1.50 extra. Minimum adult spend £10 on dine-in food and drink (for every adult who spends £10, one child eats free). 3: Cinnamon Kitchen Battersea Cinnamon Kitchen Battersea, located at London’s landmark Battersea Power Station development, serves contemporary Indian dishes and bar bites inspired by the dishes found on the Mumbai Jaipur Pink City Express train route. This summer holiday, until 31 August, children under 12 can eat free when dining with a paying adult (get one child’s meal with every adult’s meal ordered from the a la carte menu). Kids can choose from the Junior Menu, which includes a range of gently-spiced dishes including herbed chicken skewer served with steamed rice, and a fish daal of pan fried pollock with veggies and yellow lentils, all followed by homemade ice cream.

4: Rivington Greenwich Kids under 12 eat free all year round from Monday to Friday at The Rivington in Greenwich, which is just as well, as all those tourist activities at The Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory can add up. The kids menu features dishes for little ones (simple tomato spaghetti, cheddar toast fingers and scones & jam) and big ones (Rivi fish & chips, beef burger & chips, mini schnitzels with garlic mayo & peas, and Heap’s sausages & mash), which can be ordered for free when a paying adult is dining. 5: VIVI, Centre Point VIVI, just one minute from Tottenham Court Road tube station, provides an ambient escape from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street after a spot of shopping with the kids or for pre-theatre dining, and from 22 July until 9 September, kids under the age of 12 can eat for free when dining with a paying adult. There is a dedicated kids menu with a choice of healthy and wholesome favorites such as chicken breast, mashed potato and hispi cabbage, alongside treats such as macaroni cheese, and homemade VIVI wagon wheels. 11 St Giles Square WC2H 8AP1; vivirestaurant.co.uk
6: The Dorchester London, Park Lane The Dorchester London has created a special Children’s Afternoon Tea, inspired by a day out in Hyde Park, for the summer holidays. Throughout August, the colorful high tea features crudité bites – presented to the table as soon as the little guests arrive – alongside a doorman teddy cupcake, a bright yellow duck made of chocolate, jigsaw puzzle sandwiches and a chocolate milkshake. The Afternoon Tea is complimentary for children aged 5-11 years from 1-31 August when accompanied by an adult enjoying the traditional afternoon tea, priced £65 or £75 per adult (one complimentary children’s afternoon tea per adult). 7: Kids Eat for £1 at Carluccio’s, various locations Italian restaurant Carluccio’s is offering kids’ meals at just £1 throughout the summer holidays. Sure, £1 isn’t free, but it’s not far off! Under 10s can enjoy a main dish, dessert and a soft drink for just £1 with every adult main ordered. The kids’ menu features a choice of classic Italian family favorites including lasagna, ham and pea risotto, and rotelle pasta with choice of pesto, meatballs, tomato or cheese sauce. To finish, choose a refreshing apple and blackcurrant ice lolly or from a selection of sorbets and ice creams.
