Published today is an updated Cost of Living Index on a city by city basis for 2024.
Why have such a list?
It is one of the vital elements of any relocation, either within country, or internationally that the people relocating have parity in their purchasing power for their take-home salary.
i.e. Is it likely to cost more, the same or less to live in the new location?
Once established, the employer can decide what financial adjustments they will need to make to ensure their personnel are able to enjoy the lifestyle that they are accustomed to.
Using New York as the basis for comparing cities scores 100.0, other cities will cost more or less in which to live.
The most expensive city is Hamilton, Bermuda at 137.0, followed by Zurich, Switzerland which scores 122.2, then Basel, Switzerland at 121.8. New York comes in at 10th position.
Simply put, if a cup of coffee costs $3.50 in New York expect it to cost around $4.80 in Hamilton!
Lower down the list, Houston, TX comes in at 20 with 87.8, Calgary is 60th at 73.2, Hamburg in Germany ranks 72 at 70.7, Eindhoven, Netherlands scores 65.0 and is ranked 119, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is 1987th achieving a score of 50.6, so just about half the cost of living in New York.
Of the 362 cities detailed, the most inexpensive in which to live are mostly in India or Pakistan. Chennai, India scores just 22.5 at position 352, Islamabad in Pakistan achieves 20.3 at position 360, all supported by Karachi, Pakistan at position 362, and scoring just 19.3.
