Brexit uncertainties, the continuing saga

Updated: Jan 20, 2024

Uncertainty over Brexit has tempted dozens of companies pursuing a new base in the EU.

away from Britain and into the Netherlands.

Many firms have set up headquarters in the Netherlands specifically because of the UK’s uncertain position in Europe and the ever-increasing likelihood of a no-deal Brexit on 31 October.

Many of these companies had offices in Britain but, since the 2016 referendum, have either relocated to the Netherlands or established offices there; some had wanted to move into the UK but changed their plans due to the Brexit uncertainties.

Brexit has economic implications for international businesses as they need to do business everywhere in Europe. The growing uncertainty in the United Kingdom, and the clear possibility of a no deal, is causing economic turmoil for many companies. This is possibly why more and more companies are thinking of establishing themselves in the Netherlands, for example, as a potential new base for the European market. Companies that have already opted for the Netherlands in preference to the UK have done so typically because they would otherwise have no access to the important EU market after a no-deal Brexit.
